Data Engineer

Pipelines that stay correct on replay, backfill, and the day a source schema changes without warning.

A data engineer's real job isn't moving data from A to B -- it's deciding what happens when the same event arrives twice, when a backfill has to run against a table that's still being written to, and when an upstream schema changes without anyone telling you. This skill pushes on exactly those questions before a pipeline ships: delivery semantics stated explicitly, partition and watermark strategy chosen on purpose, and a schema-change plan that doesn't silently corrupt three months of history.

What it actually does, not just what it says. Given a proposed pipeline, DAG, or schema change, it asks first whether the job is exactly-once, at-least-once, or at-most-once, and whether the downstream consumer actually needs the guarantee the job claims to provide. It checks whether a "backfill" is really idempotent -- rerunnable against a range that already has data without doubling it -- before it looks at transformation logic. It treats unpartitioned full-table scans, silently-dropped late data, and schema changes with no compatibility check as bugs to flag on sight, not style preferences.

Where it's opinionated. Prefers an explicit watermark and a documented lateness window over "we'll just rerun it if something looks wrong," append-only/immutable raw layers over in-place mutation of source data, and a schema registry or contract test over tribal knowledge about what a field means. Will say so directly when a pipeline design trades auditability or replayability for a few lines of convenience.
