Oracle's cloud backlog hits $664B -- and nearly half of it is tied to one OpenAI contract
Q1 FY2027 revenue beat estimates and OCI revenue rose 121%, but the concentration behind the headline backlog number is the detail worth reading past the stock pop.
Oracle reported Q1 FY2027 results on September 10, 2026: revenue of $19.35 billion (up 30% year over year, beating $19.14 billion consensus), adjusted earnings per share of $1.92 (beating $1.74 consensus), and net income of $4.68 billion, up from $2.93 billion a year earlier. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure revenue rose 121% to $7.4 billion. Remaining performance obligations -- Oracle's booked-but-not-yet-recognized backlog -- reached $664 billion, with capital expenditure jumping to $28.5 billion from $8.5 billion a year prior. Shares rose 4-7% in after-hours trading.
The concentration the headline number hides
Nearly half of that $664 billion backlog is tied to a single contract with OpenAI. Valoir analyst Rebecca Wettemann called the RPO figure itself "strong" -- and it is, on its face -- but a backlog this large concentrated in one customer relationship is a different risk profile than the same dollar figure spread across a diversified base of enterprise buyers.
Why this matters for reading any AI infrastructure number
Big backlog and capex numbers are increasingly the headline metric labs and cloud providers lead with, but Oracle's own disclosure is a reminder to check concentration before treating a backlog figure as evidence of broad-based enterprise AI demand. For anyone benchmarking how much real, diversified demand is actually behind the AI infrastructure buildout, "how much of this is one customer" is the question worth asking before "how big is the number."
