OpenAI says its models now reach 1 billion active users

The milestone lands under four years after ChatGPT's launch, alongside an 80% GPT-5.6 price cut -- but OpenAI still isn't saying how many of that billion are paying for anything.

On July 31, 2026, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar wrote that the company's models now reach "more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses" -- a milestone reached less than four years after ChatGPT's November 2022 launch, and faster than Facebook took to hit the same user count.

What actually got disclosed

The billion-user figure spans every OpenAI surface, not just the ChatGPT app: the core chatbot, Codex for AI-assisted coding, and ChatGPT Work, the platform for connecting outside applications. It arrives alongside price cuts of up to 80% on GPT-5.6, and after OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users back in February -- a growth curve the company had expected to clear this milestone on earlier in the year before competition slowed it.

The number that's still missing

OpenAI did not break the billion down by free users, paid subscribers, API customers, or enterprise seats. That's the split that actually determines whether this is a revenue story or a reach story, and it's the same gap this site keeps running into with its own thesis: a raw usage count says nothing about value produced per dollar spent, on either side of the transaction. A company deciding whether to expand its own AI seat count off the back of a headline like "a billion users" is reasoning from adoption, not from outcome -- exactly the distinction the recoverable-spend framing on this site's dashboard methodology is built to catch.
