Samsung leads a €3B round for Mistral, the largest-ever equity raise by a European tech company

Samsung will deploy customized on-prem Mistral models across its semiconductor and chip-fab operations -- a "sovereign AI" bet on owning dedicated AI infrastructure rather than renting it from a US hyperscaler.

French frontier-AI lab Mistral raised €3 billion (roughly $3.5 billion) on September 8, 2026, in a Series D led by Samsung Electronics, with EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity co-leading. New investors include Advent, BlackRock funds, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, alongside existing backers Andreessen Horowitz, ASML, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures. It's being described as the largest-ever equity round raised by a European technology company.

Why Samsung specifically

The deal isn't a passive investment -- Samsung will deploy customized, on-premises Mistral models across its semiconductor and chip-fabrication operations. That's a large industrial customer choosing to own dedicated AI infrastructure built on a specific vendor's models rather than routing that workload through a general-purpose cloud AI service, the kind of "sovereign AI" arrangement increasingly common among companies and governments wary of dependency on US hyperscalers.

A European counterweight, backed partly by a government

Luxembourg's direct participation as an investor is notable on its own: a government co-funding a European frontier-AI lab's growth round, not just regulating the sector from outside it. For enterprise buyers weighing vendor concentration risk, Mistral's growing capital base and its Samsung deployment are both evidence that the AI infrastructure market has more than one viable center of gravity outside the dominant US labs.
