Meta's AI build-out outran its cash flow in the third quarter

Meta spent $34.91 billion on capital expenditures against $32.79 billion of operating cash flow, leaving free cash flow negative, while saying its AI investments already deliver extra ad revenue.

Meta reported third-quarter 2026 results on October 21. "Revenue was $64.60 billion, an increase of 26% year-over-year on both a reported and constant currency basis." In the same quarter, "Capital expenditures, including principal payments on finance leases, were $34.91 billion," and "Cash flow from operating activities was $32.79 billion, and free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion."

The spending outlook

Meta narrowed its full-year 2026 capital expenditure range to $135-145 billion, from a prior $130-145 billion, and guided fourth-quarter revenue "to be in the range of $73-76 billion." Its outlook commentary says "Our AI investments are already delivering substantial incremental advertising revenue," crediting better engagement, recommendations and monetization. Third-quarter costs also include a $9.89 billion charge for the state attorneys general settlement Merit AC covered in August.

Why it matters

This is the largest public test of whether AI spending pays back, and the answer Meta gives is a revenue claim rather than a payback figure. Revenue grew 26%; capital spending grew fast enough to push free cash flow below zero. If you are making the same argument inside your company, that AI spend shows up in revenue, write down which revenue, measured how, before the next budget cycle asks.
