King Charles III hosted a summit of AI industry executives at Dumfries House in Scotland on September 17, bringing together representatives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Google DeepMind and the UK's AI minister, NPR reported. "We are witnessing one of the greatest technological leaps in the history of human endeavor," the king told attendees, adding "there is a clear imperative to ensure that this rapidly evolving technology remains safe and secure." It's a return to a role he first took on in 2023, when he opened the UK's inaugural AI safety summit.
Discussion, not decisions
NPR's reporting describes a summit built around fostering conversation among industry leaders who hold genuinely different views on AI safety -- Gina Neff, deputy CEO of Responsible AI UK, framed its purpose that way -- rather than one structured to produce a joint statement, pledge or policy outcome.
