AI's five-month run as the top-cited US layoff reason ended in August
Challenger, Gray & Christmas's monthly tracker put artificial intelligence in fourth place among reasons employers gave for job cuts in August -- its lowest monthly total since December -- even as AI remains 2026's single leading cited reason for the year overall.
Challenger, Gray & Christmas's report, released September 3, 2026, counted 52,881 US job cuts announced in August -- up 58% from July's 33,429, but down 38% from the 85,979 announced in August 2025, and the lowest August total since 2022. Restructuring led all cited reasons for the month with 16,173 cuts (31%), the first month since February that Artificial Intelligence did not lead. AI fell to the fourth-most cited reason in August, with 3,462 cuts -- its lowest monthly total since December 2025, when only 142 cuts were attributed to it -- ending a five-month run, beginning in March, in which AI was the single leading monthly reason employers gave.
AI still leads for the year overall: Challenger's own report puts the 2026 year-to-date AI-attributed total at 116,175 cuts, about 22% of everything announced this year. "This is the quietest August since 2022," said Andy Challenger, the firm's chief revenue officer, in the report, though his fuller comment -- about hiring plans running ahead of last year's but positions not filling quickly -- was about the broader labor market, not AI specifically.
One quieter month, not a reversal
The same report shows Technology's August total (6,103 cuts) was that sector's lowest single month of 2026, even though its year-to-date total (155,126) is still up 52% versus the same period in 2025 -- so the pace of AI- and tech-linked cuts may be easing within a year that, on the whole, remains far above last year's for that sector. Challenger's own methodology also has a known soft spot worth naming directly: the firm categorizes cuts by the reason a company gives at announcement time, and a layoff a company attributes to "restructuring" can still have automation as its underlying driver -- something this same tracker's category boundaries can't resolve from the outside.
