AWS grows free Kiro access for students 12x to 132 universities
Kiro's student tier expands from an 11-school pilot to 132 universities across 18 countries, giving verified students a full year of the AI coding tool's paid features -- premium models included -- for free.
AWS's spec-driven coding agent Kiro is expanding its free student tier from 11 pilot universities to 132, adding 121 schools across 16 new countries for a program that now spans North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, per Kiro's own blog. Students verify with a university email and a roughly one-minute SheerID check, then get a full year of Kiro with 1,000 monthly credits and access to premium models and Kiro Web -- no credit card required, and no rollover on unused credits.
Demand outran the pilot
Kiro's Sharanya Balaji, writing on the company's own blog, put the pilot's growth plainly: "we started with 11 universities. Demand outran that list almost immediately." Deepak Singh, AWS's VP of Agentic AI, is named in Amazon's own announcement as leading the expansion, though Amazon's post doesn't attribute a direct quote to him.
Why this matters for Merit AC
A free, credit-limited student tier is a customer-acquisition play before it's anything else -- AWS is betting that whichever coding agent a developer learns on in school is the one they'll push their employer to expense later. That's precisely the kind of upstream signal that shows up downstream as shadow AI: a tool an employee already knows and trusts, expensed or adopted informally well before it appears in any procurement record.
