Anthropic commits 5% of its shares to a new Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval
Another 2% can be added at the board's discretion for every 50% rise in the company's value. With earlier pledges, Anthropic says about 20% of its shares are now set aside for the public good.
Anthropic announced on October 18 that, "subject to stockholder approval, 5% of Anthropic's shares will be committed today" to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, "with an additional 2% added at the board's discretion for every 50% increase in the company's value above a set baseline." The company did not say what the baseline is.
How the fund is set up
The fund is a wholly owned LLC, and Anthropic says none of the equity it holds "will be used for lobbying or political giving, in the US or abroad." It may make large donations to nonprofits or direct distributions to specific groups of people; Anthropic names labor-market effects of AI as one example. Counting its co-founders' pledges to donate 80% of their equity and an employee donation match, Anthropic says "roughly 20% of Anthropic shares will be dedicated to the public good." It says it will share the fund's structure and governance in the coming months. The Associated Press reports Anthropic is planning an initial public offering as soon as November; Anthropic's post does not mention one.
Why it matters
A fund aimed partly at AI's effect on jobs is a signal of how the company that sells the tools expects them to change work. For a buyer, the more practical takeaway is that the providers you depend on are about to change shape, and a public listing brings quarterly pressure on pricing and revenue. Know what you spend with each provider and what it produces, so a price or plan change is something you can measure.
