Anthropic signs a 20-year lease at EverWind's planned C$10B Nova Scotia data centre campus

It is Anthropic's first data centre agreement in Canada. The first phase is due online in late 2027 at 95 MW, growing to 420 MW in 2028.

EverWind announced on October 16 that Anthropic has signed a 20-year lease for an 18,600-square-metre facility at Point Tupper, in Cape Breton, The Canadian Press reports, citing an Anthropic press release saying the site will power Claude and "growing Canadian demand." Reuters reports it is Anthropic's first data centre agreement in Canada. EverWind did not disclose the lease's value.

The project

EverWind says the plan totals $10 billion: $8 billion for the data centre campus and $2 billion for onshore wind projects, which it calls the largest private investment in Nova Scotia's history. Phase one draws 95 MW and is scheduled to come online late next year, with a 325 MW expansion expected in mid-2028 for 420 MW in total. Until the wind farms are built the site will run on the existing grid, and EverWind says it will pay the full cost of connections and network upgrades so other ratepayers don't. Nova Scotia's NDP leader, Claudia Chender, said the government is supporting the project "without any discussion, consultation, legislation or regulations."

Why it matters

Neither company has said whether Canadian customers will be able to choose to have their requests processed at this site. If data residency matters to your business, ask your provider that directly as the capacity comes online, and until it is in a contract, assume nothing about where your data is processed has changed.
