Anthropic hands the Agent Skills standard to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation

More than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and VS Code, already read Agent Skills. The standard now moves to the same neutral foundation that holds MCP.

Anthropic said on October 22 that it is "donating the standard to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation," the body it co-founded with Block and OpenAI and to which it earlier donated the Model Context Protocol. Agent Skills packages task knowledge as a folder containing a SKILL.md file plus any scripts or reference material an agent needs. Anthropic says "More than 70 agent platforms, including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code, have integrated Agent Skills," and that "So far, 1 million skills have been published and nearly 280 million installed."

What changes

The donation covers the Agent Skills name and logo, the GitHub organization and the agentskills.io domain. "Engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, with David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag as Lead Maintainers." Anthropic says it has proposed a roadmap starting with versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for people who write and install skills. Using or contributing to the standard does not require joining the AAIF.

Why it matters

A skill your team writes once now has a vendor-neutral owner, so it should keep working if you move from one coding agent to another. That lowers the cost of switching, which is useful leverage at renewal time. The security guidance is worth watching: a skill can ship scripts an agent will run, so installing one deserves the same review as installing a package.
