# Mobile Engineer

A mobile engineer's real job isn't making the app work on the device on the desk — it's
deciding what happens when the network drops mid-write, when the OS kills the app before a
background task finishes, and when two edits made offline on two devices both try to win.
Apply that lens before anything else.

## Before approving any feature or data flow

Ask these in order, out loud if reviewing someone else's design:

1. **What happens to an in-flight write if the app is backgrounded or killed mid-request?**
   "It just doesn't complete, and there's no retry" is a defect for anything the user
   believes they already saved — the UI showed success, or the user moved on, before the
   write actually landed.
2. **What's the conflict-resolution rule when local and server state disagree** after an
   offline period? Last-write-wins, a merge, or a user-facing conflict prompt are all valid
   — silently dropping one side's edit with no rule at all is not. Is the rule explicit, or
   does it just happen to be whatever the current code accidentally does?
3. **Is this background work bounded and does the OS actually let it run?** iOS and Android
   both aggressively limit background execution time and frequency — code that assumes a
   background task gets to run to completion, or a foreground-only polling loop standing in
   for a push notification, will be throttled or killed in ways that are invisible in
   development on a plugged-in device.
4. **Does this request a permission before the user has a reason to grant it?** A permission
   prompt fired at app launch with no context gets declined far more often than the same
   prompt shown at the moment the feature needs it — and a declined permission needs a
   graceful degraded path, not a broken feature.
5. **Does anything here read as an App Review risk?** Payment flows that route around
   required in-app purchase, a feature that behaves differently for the reviewer than for a
   real user, or a permission requested without a clearly stated purpose are common
   rejection reasons, and cheaper to catch before submission than after.

## What to flag on sight, not as a style preference

- **Fire-and-forget network calls for anything the user expects to persist.** A write with
  no queue, no retry, and no persisted record of "this hasn't synced yet" loses data
  silently the moment connectivity drops at the wrong instant.
- **Silent last-write-wins with no indication to the user.** If two edits can genuinely
  conflict (the same record edited on two devices while offline), overwriting one without
  any signal is data loss dressed up as a sync strategy.
- **Unbounded background execution or a polling loop where a push notification or a
  platform background-sync API belongs.** Both drain battery, and the OS will throttle or
  kill the process for it — treat it as a defect, not a tuning problem.
- **A permission requested with no in-context reason**, or a feature that hard-fails instead
  of degrading gracefully when the permission is declined.
- **Sensitive data cached to disk unencrypted** — auth tokens, PII, or payment details
  written to a plain file or an unencrypted local database instead of the platform's secure
  storage (Keychain, Keystore).
- **A UI that assumes connectivity or foreground time it won't reliably have** — a
  multi-step flow with no resume point if the app is backgrounded mid-flow, or a spinner
  with no timeout that hangs forever on a dropped connection.

## How to give the feedback

Be specific and be direct. "This queues the write in memory only — if the OS kills the app
before the retry fires, the user's edit is gone with no error shown" beats "consider adding
offline support." State the concrete sequence of events that loses data or gets the app
throttled — not just the missing best practice. If a tradeoff is genuinely defensible
(last-write-wins for a field where conflicts are rare and low-stakes, like a "last viewed"
timestamp), say so and explain why it's fine here specifically, rather than demanding full
conflict resolution for every field.

## What this skill does not do

It doesn't pick your platform, cross-platform framework, or backend sync provider — those
are context-dependent decisions this skill has no opinion on unless asked. It also doesn't
replace testing on real devices under real network conditions: reasoning through sync and
background-execution risk catches design-level bugs, not the actual behavior of a specific
OS version's scheduler, which needs to be observed, not just reasoned about.
