OpenAI starts testing ads inside ChatGPT's image generator

A new, "clearly labeled" visual ad format will show up while ChatGPT generates images for US users later this month -- the clearest sign yet that ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users are now also an ad inventory.

OpenAI will begin testing a new ad format inside ChatGPT's image generator later this month, showing product inspiration and usage demonstrations to an initial group of advertisers in the US only. Per OpenAI's own wording, quoted in BleepingComputer's report: "Initially, we'll test this new ad format during image generation in ChatGPT. Ads will be clearly labeled, and remain separate from the image being created." OpenAI says the ads won't influence ChatGPT's own responses, and pairs the launch with brand-suitability safeguards meant to keep ads out of sensitive or emotionally vulnerable conversations.

The measurement stack is already built

This isn't OpenAI's first ad move -- it already has conversion-measurement integrations in place with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp, built to let advertisers track whether a ChatGPT ad exposure led to an actual purchase, including offline ones. The image-generation format is a new placement riding on top of infrastructure OpenAI had already stood up, not a one-off experiment. OpenAI also says independent measurement partners won't get access to private conversations as part of that evaluation.

Why this matters beyond ad budgets

ChatGPT's 1.2 billion weekly users make this one of the largest ad-inventory launches in the industry regardless of format, but the detail worth tracking for anyone paying for AI tools is the boundary OpenAI is drawing: ads inside a generation flow, explicitly walled off from the model's own output and reasoning. Whether that wall holds -- and whether "clearly labeled" stays clearly labeled as the format expands past image generation -- is the kind of claim this site exists to keep checking rather than take at face value from a company that now has a direct revenue incentive to blur it.
