Mistral buys Paris adtech startup Pimento -- for the team, not the product

Mistral''s third acquisition of 2026 folds Pimento''s engineers into Vibe, its conversational assistant -- and reporting on the actual price splits, with Mistral itself only confirming "several million euros."

Mistral AI confirmed on September 23 that it has acquired Pimento, a Paris startup whose software turns campaign briefs, brand identities, and campaign data into ad visuals and short social-media animations. It's Mistral's third acquisition of 2026. Pimento was founded in October 2022 by Florent Facq and Tomás Yany, and raised a €3 million seed round in December 2023 led by Partech and Cygni Capital.

The price is genuinely unsettled

Mistral told AFP only that the price was "several million euros," without confirming an exact figure -- and the reporting that has filled the gap doesn't agree. French outlet L'Informé put the deal at around €3.8 million; Sifted, citing filings, reported €12.7 million in cash and shares. Both figures are small relative to Mistral's own scale after its €3 billion raise, but the size of the gap between them is worth flagging rather than picking one and presenting it as settled.

It's an acquihire, not a product buy

Mistral says Pimento's staff are joining its engineering and product teams to work on Vibe, Mistral's conversational assistant (formerly Le Chat) -- not to keep running Pimento's ad-creative product as a separate line. That's consistent with the acquisition being priced more like a team buy than a revenue-multiple product acquisition, and it's the third such move by Mistral this year, a pattern of building out consumer-product capability by acquiring small teams rather than hiring them individually.
