Illinois governor creates an AI Cabinet to prepare for AI-related incidents
Executive Order 2026-07 sets up a standing group of state officials and outside experts to advise on AI risk to public infrastructure, months after Illinois passed one of the country's broadest AI safety laws.
Illinois governor JB Pritzker signed Executive Order 2026-07 on September 22, establishing an Illinois Artificial Intelligence Cabinet -- a standing body of state officials and outside experts in cybersecurity, data privacy, ethics, law, and technology, tasked with advising state government on AI-related risk. Pritzker must appoint the cabinet's members within 30 days of the order.
What the cabinet actually does
The order's scope is state government's own exposure, not private-sector AI use: the cabinet advises agencies on preparing for AI-related incidents, identifying safeguards for public assets and infrastructure -- government buildings, water systems, education systems, information infrastructure -- and evaluating further steps Illinois could take to strengthen AI safety and accountability. It's an advisory body, not a regulator; it doesn't itself have enforcement power over anything in the private market.
The second move in one summer
This follows, rather than replaces, Illinois' Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, signed earlier this summer -- one of the more expansive state-level AI safety laws passed so far. Pritzker's office frames the cabinet as a response to continued inaction at the federal level, alongside a specific news hook: another AI-industry whistleblower resignation cited in the announcement. For any company with Illinois-based infrastructure or state contracts, the near-term relevance is limited to the cabinet's own remit -- public-sector risk -- but it's a signal of the direction state-level AI policy is headed absent a federal framework.
