Google tests letting Gemini complete a Flipkart purchase without leaving the chat

A limited India-only pilot puts a "Buy" button on select Flipkart listings inside Gemini and AI Mode -- Amazon listings appear in the same results with no such option.

Google has started testing direct in-chat purchases from Flipkart -- the Walmart-owned Indian e-commerce platform -- through Gemini and Google's AI Mode, TechCrunch reported September 26. Select users see a "Buy" button on qualifying Flipkart product listings that routes straight into a Flipkart checkout flow without leaving the AI interface. The pilot currently covers a narrow set of categories: smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories.

A visible asymmetry

Amazon listings appear in the same Gemini and AI Mode results but carry no equivalent purchase option -- a pointed detail, given Google has invested $350 million in Flipkart and built a "Universal Commerce Protocol" explicitly meant to let AI interfaces transact across retailers generally, not just one partner. Whether that protocol stays retailer-neutral in practice, once a paying partner is in the room, is exactly the kind of platform-power question this test surfaces before the feature has even left India.

Timing is deliberate

Google says it plans to broaden the rollout in October, positioned ahead of India's festive shopping season -- the country's highest-volume e-commerce stretch of the year. That timing, plus the narrow initial category list, reads as a controlled test of conversion and trust in AI-native checkout before a much bigger, revenue-relevant push, rather than an instant broad launch. For anyone tracking whether "AI shopping agents" actually transact versus just recommend, this is one of the first concrete instances of a major platform wiring a real payment flow directly into a chat interface.
