A 19-year-old raises $11M from a16z to sell a $3,499 "personal AI computer"

Ghost's Core ships with three open-weight models preinstalled, an Nvidia Blackwell GPU, and no screen -- a bet that running AI locally is a hardware problem most people's laptops can't actually solve well.

Ghost, a startup founded by 19-year-old Zain Javaid along with co-founders Nicholas Chua (19), Yifei Chen (24), and Gautam Sharda (23), raised an $11 million seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with Abstract, Audacious Ventures, SV Angel, and Nova also participating. The company opened preorders on October 5 for Core, a $3,499 dedicated computer for running AI models locally, built around an Nvidia RTX Pro 4000 SFF Blackwell GPU, with no built-in screen -- it's controlled through a phone app or voice. Shipping is scheduled for the last week of October.

The pitch is that your laptop is the wrong box for this

Core ships preloaded with three open-weight models -- Qwen-3.8-Next, Qwen-3.8-27B, and Gemma-4-31B -- and supports pulling additional models from Hugging Face, with processing kept local and personal data encrypted on-device. Javaid's framing for why this needs to be its own device rather than software on an existing machine: "You can run models on existing hardware, but it's a terrible experience on many levels." That's the actual bet underlying the $3,499 price tag -- that the bottleneck for running capable AI privately isn't model quality, it's that consumer hardware wasn't built for the job.

A hardware bet in a market full of software bets

Most well-funded AI startups right now are selling access to someone else's model over an API. Ghost is selling a box, at consumer-hardware prices that are easy to compare against a MacBook or a gaming PC, for a narrower promise: AI that runs entirely on your own machine instead of a vendor's cloud. Whether that promise is worth a $3,499 premium over just buying a capable GPU and running the same open-weight models yourself is the question actual buyers, not seed investors, are about to answer once Core starts shipping this month.
